Burgundian Dining explores the food and drink culture of the Low Countries in the 15th and 16th centuries. The exhibition unfolds like a four-course meal: from lavish banquets in city palaces and steaming kitchens filled with cooks and kitchen maids, to bustling markets and taverns, before ending with a delicate balance between abundance and scarcity. Where does enjoyment end and excess begins?

What Will You Discover?

A Feast of Power

Take your seat at a truly Burgundian banquet, amongst princes and nobles. Watch this piece of political theatre unfold as spectacular dishes appear on the table, fountains pour an endless stream of wine, and performance and satire fill the dining halls.

A City Full of Flavour

Beyond the palace walls, markets reveal what the people of Burgundy ate each day. Herring, grain and spices all meet at this crossroads of trade routes, where ingredients arrive from across the world.

Feasting and Going Without

When does luxury become excess? And when does scarcity become real deprivation? Rich food and meagre fare, seasons of feasting and fasting: the table becomes a mirror in which we can examine ourselves.
