Museum Garden
Did you know that the museum has no fewer than three walled gardens? There is the large walled garden on Sint-Janstraat, the smaller garden on Frederik de Merodestraat and a third walled garden behind the city palace. The two public gardens are open free of charge throughout the year, from 10 am to 5 pm. Settle down in the gardens or on the coffee-bar terrace and relax after your museum visit, or book a guided garden tour.
Good to Know
Accessibility
The large walled garden on Sint-Janstraat is wheelchair accessible. A paved central path leads through the garden to the museum’s main entrance.
Coffee-bar Terrace
When the weather is fine, enjoy a refreshing drink, light lunch or snack on the coffee-bar terrace in the walled garden.
Carillon
The city palace has its own carillon, hidden away in the tower. The carillon player reaches the instrument by climbing a narrow staircase. Can you hear the bells ringing on your visit? It may be a student from Mechelen's Carillon School practising.
The tower and carillon were fully restored in 2022, allowing visitors once again to enjoy the instrument's beautiful sound. The best place to listen is the large walled garden, where the sounds echo towards Sint-Janstraat. Every Saturday in May, you can enjoy a free carillon concert there.
