Contemporary artist Cindy Wright, born in 1972, presents Eye To Eye, a series of ten large-scale charcoal drawings, each depicting a different skull. An eleventh and even larger drawing completes the series as a synthesis of the ten individual skulls. Themes such as decay, finiteness and vulnerability are recurring elements in the artist's work. Here, she aligns with the 17th-century European painting tradition which encompasses these themes in the still life.

Cindy Wright's still lifes are compelling for more than their visual power alone. They also carry a strong social and ecological concern. Through her work, she raises ethical questions about our human morality and fragility, our relationship with death and the future of society and the planet we inhabit.

Programme

Publication

The exhibition is accompanied by an artist's publication issued by Stockmans Art Books. This numbered  portfolio contains prints of every work in the Eye to Eyeseries.

Links with the Permanent Exhibition

Along with the artist, the curators reflect on three artworks from the museum's permanent collection: the portrait of Saint Jerome, a depiction of Margaret of Austria in mourning and the fragile Enclosed Gardens. Visitors are invited to look at these early 16th-century masterpieces from a different perspective and confront the taboo around mortality.

Historical Work

Alongside Wright’s work, the exhibition also features one historical object: Saint Jerome by Gielis Neins. This Mechelen alabaster dates from the 17th century. The biblical figure of Jerome is often depicted with skulls.
