The Neverending Park is the culmination of De Grond der Dingen, a participatory project by theatre company ARSENAAL/LAZARUS and Museum Hof van Busleyden. They spend two years gathering ideas from people across Mechelen for a better city. The proposals produce an artificial park built inside the underground exhibition space at Museum Hof van Busleyden.

The park, complete with trees and a grandstand, is designed by Decoratelier Jozef Wouters along with Barry Ahmad Talib. Artist Benjamin Verdonck gives form to some eighty ideas put forward by local residents. Presented as models, they offer visions of an ideal city. In The Neverending Park, these proposals are debated, negotiated, considered and reconsidered with the people of Mechelen.

The park is also a space for reflection. From 2 July to 30 August 2020, it features lockdown drawings by artist Benoît van Innis (1960–2024). Shown under the title Instant Light, they capture the unusual, humorous and recognisable moments of life during lockdown. A publication of the same name accompanies the exhibition.

Discussion lies at the heart of The Neverending Park. Activities take place almost every day throughout the exhibition, ranging from lunch-time talks to evening debates, panel discussions and workshops.

During the closing weekend of 12 and 13 September 2020, attention turns to the future. What happens next?  The practical proposals are formally presented to the city council.
