With Gap in the Clouds, artist Ricardo Brey makes a positive statement. He wants to offer a sign of hope in unsettled times. The global pandemic and the escalating protests for racial and gender equality inspired Brey to create a series of introspective works. New work that reaches back to the past but is also willing to look to the future.

Ricardo Brey draws inspiration for his work from the richness of Afro-Cuban culture, personal memories and myths, legends and stories. The highlight of the exhibition was the 'Every Life is a Fire' series, a group of enclosed boxes designed to evoke surprise and wonder. Opening them is a ritual in itself, prompting contemplation of that which passes.

Programme

Artist Performances

Brey is present at the museum at different times during the exhibition. He performs works from the series Every Life is a Fire. Layer by layer, he reveals what is hidden in the closed boxes. This gives audiences a unique opportunity to see every stage of the work's creation and ask the artist questions.

Museum Camp

Children taking part in the museum camp Many Shades of Blue enjoy a very special experience. Inspired by Ricardo Brey’s boxes, they create their own 'dream box'. This is a box that somehow unfolds to reveal an entire dream world inside. Brey himself comes to the museum camp to meet the children. He opens a few of his boxes and talks about them.

Book Launch

The Gap in the Clouds exhibition is accompanied by a book of the same name. It is presented at An Evening with Ricardo Brey. There are talks, interviews and a poetry reading by Ricardo Brey, Femke Vandenbosch, Anne Wetsi Mpoma and Peter Verhelst.

De Garage

Brey’s work can also be admired beyond the museum. At the contemporary art space De Garage, now De Kunsthal, the walls are a splash of blue. Several artworks transform De Garage into a preview that draws visitors to the exhibition at the museum.

Visitor Guide

The exhibition offers visitor guides for adults and families. The general guide introduces five ways of looking, to help visitors enter the world of Ricardo Brey. Families explore the exhibition through six varied and creative activities.
