How modern were the people of mediaeval Mechelen? In this interactive museum class, we explore themes including power, diversity and women’s rights through the eyes of teenagers.
Guided Tour with Creative Activities
Every age has its own powerful figures. Today, you might think of world leaders, influential businesspeople or social media influencers with millions of followers. In 1507, these figures included Margaret of Austria and Charles V. During this interactive tour, pupils meet not only them, but also ordinary citizens, craftspeople and others who appeared less often in the spotlight.
In the second part of the session, pupils work with one or more museum objects that catch their interest. They explore a historical figure in greater depth and, in small groups, create a short interview or story. This allows pupils to step briefly outside their own time and discover how the past continues to shape the world today.
Skills and Learning Goals
During this museum class, pupils practise skills that support the history curriculum and other humanities subjects.
They learn to:
- analyse and interpret historical sources
- view events from different perspectives
- draw parallels between the past and present
- think critically about power, inequality and representation
- express their ideas clearly, in speech or writing
The museum class supports learning goals such as cultural awareness, historical awareness, language and citizenship. Cross-curricular skills such as critical thinking, collaboration and reflection are also covered.
