Depot Rato Tour – a Look Behind the Scenes

Discover how Mechelen’s heritage is cared for and preserved at the collection store house house in Muizen. This former factory building is now a secure home for the museum’s collection and those of Mechelen's four other heritage partners.

Marvel at racks filled with paintings and sculptures and travel back through time as you explore archaeological finds and historical objects. Go behind the scenes and discover the care and precision with which a conservator restores a work of art to its former splendour.

What can you expect?

During the tour you will:

  • explore the different collections held at the store house, from paintings and parade floats to giant figures and thousands of books
  • walk through converted industrial buildings where steam turbines, pumps and ventilators were once manufactured, and where heritage collections are now given the space and care they deserve
  • discover the innovative construction methods used to create the right preservation conditions
  • Come face to face with Mechelen's family of giants

This is an interactive tour, with time to look closely at the collections and uncover their hidden stories. Your guide will adapt the pace to suit your group, with plenty of time for questions.
