Group Tour of the Permanent Exhibition – At Home in Burgundian Mechelen

Travel back with us to Mechelen in the 15th and 16th centuries. This was a golden age, when the city became the administrative heart of the Southern Netherlands. From her court in Mechelen, Margaret of Austria governed the region on behalf of its ruler. She surrounded herself with artists, scholars and precious manuscripts, helping the city become a place where art and politics strengthened one another.

At the city palace of her neighbour, Hiëronymus van Busleyden, your group will step into the world of the Burgundians. Your guide will bring the stories behind unique works of art to life and connect them to questions that still matter today.

What can you expect?

During the tour:

  • discover how Mechelen became a centre of power and culture in the 15th and 16th centuries
  • meet historical figures including Margaret of Austria and Charles V
  • hear the stories of ordinary people from Mechelen whose lives are often left out of history books
  • spend time with unmissable masterpieces such as the Enclosed Gardens and the Mechelen Choirbook
  • discuss themes including power, faith and ambition

This is an interactive tour, with time to look closely at the works of art and uncover the stories hidden within them. Your guide will adapt the pace to suit your group, with plenty of time for questions.
